Data Description

The Maine and New Hampshire Coastal Resident Survey was administered in the summer of 2015. The sample area for the survey was New Hampshire and Maine’s shared coast. Towns were selected for inclusion in the survey if they were defined as part of their respective state’s coastal zone; this yielded 146 coastal zone towns in Maine and 37 coastal zone towns in New Hampshire

The survey consisted of 5 main sections:

  • Resident priorities for coastal management and water quality knowledge
  • Beach use or shellfish consumption
  • Willingness to contribute to coastal water quality improvement
  • Personal characteristics and risk behaviors, belief in climate change, and trust in scientists
  • Demographics

We mailed invitations to 4000 Maine and New Hampshire residents to participate in the study, with a response rate of 32.9%. Prior to this survey, we invited 6000 Maine and New Hampshire residents to participate in a pilot study online, with a response rate of 10.0%. The Maine and New Hampshire Coastal Resident Survey reflects adjustments to the pilot study based on observed response patterns and feedback from our state agency partners. The survey questions from each of these survey instruments and all survey reports can be downloaded from the Survey Documents page.
